Captain Fritz Elfving was a Swedish immigrant who came to Astoria around 1907. When improved roads brought more car traffic to the mouth of the Columbia River, Captain Elfving decided to capitalize on that by founding a ferry business called the Astoria-McGowan Ferry Company. In this episode, learn about the first two vessels that Captain Elfving had built to ferry people across the Columbia River.
